A RACIAL PROBLEM

Are Filipinos Actually Mongolians

OBJECTIONS TO MARRIAGE

The status of marriages of mora than 100 white American girls to Filipinos hinges on the nutcome of an injunction which Judge William Doran has granted to Mrs. Stella Robinson, temporarily preventing the marriage of her daughter, Miss Ruby Robinson. "Luxi dancer," to Tony Moreno, Filipino.

Marriage licences have been issued for Filipino-American alliances since 1921 on the basis of an opinion, by a county attorney to the effect that Filipinos are Malays.

11

The present action is based on Californian law which prevents the marriage of white persons to Mongo- lians in the state,

Mrs. Robinson declared, in obtaining the injunction to prevent her caugh ter's marriage, that modern ethnologi cal research proved that the Filipinos were actually Mongolians and not Malaya had been supposed. Thus they came under the provision of the state law.

to the complaint that he refused to declare the Government's intentions regarding safeguarding and Mc- Kenna duties, Mr. Snowden pointed out that on the first day that the Government met in Parliament, the Premier had stated that no further applications for safeguarding would be considered, that the existing) duties would expire at the appoint-]] |ed date, and that the future policy would be declared at the right time.

Snowden's Posers

of

In regard to the demand made in the motion for the extension safeguarding, Mr. Snowden Buid that there were two queations which had had been put to the protec-) tionista tens of thousands of time and no answer had ever been given. The first was, if protection would cure unemployment here, why had it not cured unemployment in high- ly protected countries, The second question was, if protection was a good thing for workers, why were wages in these highly protected countries only half the wages here? When Conservatives had answered these questions he would continue to discuss the subject, but not till then. The main purpose of the motion was to condemn him be- cause of his reticence regarding these duties. He would make no statement beyond what he had al- ready said..
