An Alternative Route An alternative route Valdivostack to North China is by a Japanese line of small steamers the east coast of 'Korea and touching at Nelshin and Gensan, with both of which .there Seoul, s rail connection

For men, travelling alone this route is well worth trying.

The war disturbed 'the Siberian route, and early in 1915 it took four weeks to go from London to Peking. By 1910 the connection by way of Bergen through Finland was great-running down ly improved and the time London to Peking was reduced to 16 daya.

With the appearance of the Bolshevists traffic stopped alto gether. It was resumed about 1924, but most Inconveniently be cause of the difficulty of buying tickets and obtaining visas. How- ever, the Moscow Government was anxious to restore the efficiency of the Siberian line, and to obtain the funds for the purpose from the passenger traffic between the Far East and Europe. By degrees the servico was quickened and improved, and in the summer of 1929 the journey between London and Peking was reduced to 12 days, with attendant difficulties removed. One of the few complaints still to be made is that it seerns necessary to mulet the traveller from China £3 for a telegram to Moscow asking authority for pass- port visas.

The Russians quickly switched the Siberian trains to the alternative route through the Amur and Ussuri Railways to Vladivo- stock. In October the writer left London, and travelling through Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow, and Chita, and thence by the Amur route through Haboravak, reached Vladivostock on the 18th day. There followed the Japaneso steamer to Tsuruga (two daya). The whole journey to Peking was completed in exactly 10 days. [SULTANS' QUARREL IN SUMATRA

LIGHT CUT OFF AT WEDDING FEAST

REMARKABLE MARRIAGE

Medan, Jan. 27.

The inhabitants of Tandjong Foera (on the East Coast of Suma- tra) witnessed this week the marri age of Sjarif Hasjim Abdul Djalil Sjaifcedin, Sultan of Slak, to the daughter of Tengkoe Pangeran Em- boeng of Langkat, the sister of his late consort, writes the Straits Times correspondent.

It was a remarkable marriage and I shall never forget the atranga Impression I received, when I was introduced to the bridegroom, the Sultan of Slak, who appeared to be extremely worried.

Later I understood the reason for his distress-a bitter contro- versy had arisen over his marriage, between the Sultan of Sink and the Sultan of Langkat, the latter the uncle of the bride and a very richį

and powerful man on the East Coast of Sumatra,

I wondered at the time why only gasoline lamps were burning while; everywhere in the palace electric lamps could be seen but it was inter revealed that the Sultan of Langkat had ordered the supply of current to be cut off, because the power, station is his 'property.

A Question of Prestige One of the princes told me that the differences had arisen over a question of prestige. The Sultan of Langkat is of the opinion that the Sultan of Slak must visit him, first, and the Sultan of Slak de- clines, because his "empire" is older than that of Langkat. The

Labour Inspection Conference

Some time ago, a planter from Sumatra in a letter to the Straits Times made a complaint relating to the methods of labour Inspection.. His objection was that the planter in Sumatra is burdened with regu tations, which are of no use to the

coolies and make conditions rather

worse than better. Since then more attention has been paid to this subject and a considerable im provement in labour inspection has been made.

Employers and employees on the east coast of Sumatra were in- vited to Batavia to a conference with the Chief of the Labour Office and some of the leading labour in spectors, to discuss the various pos sibilities of co-operation.

This conference has been very success- ful, for it was generally recognis ed that an understanding must be reached. The Labour Ofice laid much stresa on the fact that there was no foundation for the belief of unbridgeable differences be- tween the employers' interests and labour Inspection, and the ployers declared that they would be glad to co-operate if some basta could be found.

Important Changes

em.

One of the most important changes is that in future the in- apections will be announced 24 hours beforehand, except for those estates which are suspected for one or another reason. The cus- tom of allowing native Interpreters to go.around independently to col- lect complaints from the coolies, which in the past has been detri- mental to discipline on the estates, has been abolished. In future, i

coolle complains to the labour in- spector, he will be referred to the assistant' concerned and if at the next inspection, It is found that the coolle has not obtained his rights further stops will be taken.

Also in other respects the good- will of the Labour Office has be come evident. It was promised that the recruiting of labour in spectors would be fully reconsider. ed. Formerly these posts were largely reserved for rotired army and navy captains with very little idea of labour problems but in future, only those with a good preliminary training in thla class All the pomp and circumstance of beautiful Pauline Chapel, and Cardinal, Brussels net.
