"CHARLIE'S" STUDIO

A Job That Cost Him $135,000

Yet Charlie fared better than a couple of girls who operate a restau- rant on another payed thorough fare. These girls hang out near Hollywood Boulevard Gower Street. At one time, their place was a favourite dietetic gathering spot for flick-ites. Anita Stewart, Bill Hant, Viola Dana, and other former headliners dropped in re- gularly. When the street WAR paved, the girls

were taxed ap- proximately $1,100 as their share for the asphalt, It so happened, however, that instead of widening the street on their side, the city fathers widened it on the other. So the girls paid and paid and dug into the family exchequer for the dubious privilege of obliging speed- ing motorists.

WHISTLING ARTIST

Eddie Goulding answers

to the description versatile more than any mortal I've met. Eddie not only writes original stories and adapta- tions, but he directs pictures, writes stage plays, booles, and music. He is also guilty of having been an actor. As a lad, Eddle studied voice | with un Fialian in Rome. Or was it another Italian city? Be that as it may, the teacher taught his pupils the art of whistling.

Eddie can even whistle high C. He wrote the songs in ""The Trespasser"; also the theme song in Dolores Del Rio's initial talky, "The Bad One"; et cetera. He composes songe whistling them. Quite a gift.

CARMEL MYERS

Carmel Myers walked herself into a restaurant and, being optimistic, ordered spinach. She walked into the same restaurant the following day and didn't know what to order.

"We have some nice spinach," suggested the waiter.

Carmel, instead of asking how his liver iras, commented: "I had some yesterday and there was more sand in the saucer than spinash."

"It'a very nice to-day," argued the waiter, earning his salary if not his tip.

"Oh, I see," said straight-faced Carmel. "They're trying to put grit in me."

SCHILDKRAUT

Rudolph Schildkraut has recov- ered from the slege of asthma that at one time threatened his life. The slege lost him a swell job in Herbert Brenon'a production of "Sergeant Grischa." But the Schildkraut peer has been engaged by M. G. M. fór à' role commen- surate with his histrionic ability. STAGE MAKE-UP Poser For Sir Henry Wood's Orchestra

Members of Sir Henry Wood'a Queen's Hall Orchestra, which in cludes 20 women, are wondering whether they will find it advisable

to

use theatrical make-up when appearing on the alage of the Lon don Coliseum.

Although artista of every kind regard make-up as essential on the atage, Sir Henry has decided that for the opening performance his orchestra will appear as at a concert hall.

He has bren Influenced by the special lighting which will be used.

There will be no footlights. Instead, a special form of diffused lighting, from the wings and from above the stage, has been installed.

An official of the Coliseum said to a reporter that make-up may, however, be found necessary,

"It is unoxampled," he said, "for women to appear on the stage with- out some theatrical make-up"

There will be no spotlight from the auditorium while the orchestra is paying. It would cast a shadow over Sir Henry's music. The absence of footlights will also be a novelty.

Episodes in Belgian history in a series of splendid tableaux, are being presented before the King and Queen and the Royal Princes of Belgium at a Brussels theatre..

Conductor Triumphs

Dr. Malcolm Sargent conducted the London Symphony Orchestra concert at the Albert Hall from B violin part. using a borrowed baton and wearing a jacket instead of his customary morning coat.

While he was lunching at a club with a friend, his case, containing his scores, his morning cont, and bis batona, was stolen from his car in St. James's-street, S.W.

Dr. Sargent described his con- ductorship of the concert as "very trying." Members of the orchestra described it as a triumph. Dr. Sargent said:

Kathryn Carver, vaim dotable, offers bedside cheer to her famous husband, Adolphe Menjou, also of the films, who la recovering hf the American Hospital, Paris, from an operation for appendicitis.
