GANDHI PREPARING FOR THE FRAY

PLANS PASSIVE RESISTANCE CAMPAIGN

Ahmedabad, Yesterday. Definite plans are crystallising at M. Gandhi's headquarters for launching a passive resistance campaign, and to be ready to put them into operation on the date of the expiration of the ultima- tum, which Gandh! is preparing for presentation to the Viceroy. The first battle is likely to be on the question of the salt monopoly. Gandhi's agents, including a daughter of the late Admiral Sir Edmund Slade, are leaving for the salt mines and factories.Reuter.

Civil Disobedience

Ahmedabad, Saturday, The All-India Congress Executive has authorised Gandhi to start civil disobedience, the resolution passed authorising Gandhi and other believerà in the creed of non- violence to start civil disobedience as and when they desire.

The resolution expresses the hope that when the campaign is actually working all members of the. Con- gress and others will extend to- warda civil resistance full co-opera- tion in every possible way, and that lawyers and students will withdraw co-operation from the Government and throw themselves into the "final struggle."-Reuter.

Much sympathy will be felt for the wife and daughter of Mr. Ber- nardo Xavier, who passed away at 3.30 this morning at his residence, No; 4; St. Joseph Terraca. He was about 74 years of age, and had been confined to his bed for two months. though he had been suffering for many years from digestive trouble which was later diagnosed as cancer In the stomach,

Mr. Xavier had been employed at Holt's Wharf for the long period of 30 years. He retired two years ago.
