ADVANTAGES OF THE

ROTARY

COMPACTNESS OF ELECTRIC AUXILIARIES

CONSERVATION OF SPACE

The electric motor has recom mended itself to shipowners for driving auxillary machinery on shipboard not only because of its compactness but also on account of the ease with which it can be arranged in positions convenient to the operation of the auxiliary. One of the most recent examples of what careful design can accom- plish is Measra. Mumford's new "Vertex" unit. It combines all the advantages of a motor-driven rotary or centrifugal pump from a.space point of view, with those of a direct-acting pump from the mechanical standpoint. The whole tendency in modern machinery is towards conservation of floor space, which was not always pos.. sible with Some of the earlier electrically-driven auxiliaries. In, certain directions development has been on the side of the pump rather than of the electric motor, and in motorships particularly

One sees

a large motor driving Kn almost ridiculously small pump. And yet this is hardly the fault of the pump but rather that of the power required to drive it and the duty required of it. The introduction to marine work and the perfection of cen- trifugal and of rotary pumps came at a time. when electricity for use on board ship was just

beginning to reach its present im- portant position, and the develop ment of the small electric motor have proceeded virtually hand in hand. And this development has tended to bring with it very gradual improvements in control technique for the motors. It fa becoming the usual thing to-day, for example, to arrange as far as posi alble push-button control for the Individual auxiliary motors on the motors themselves. Each pump can then be started or stopped "on the spot" by the man on watch, just as in the cage of steam pumps ench can be indivi dually controlled. The tendency

is to abolish where possible the big contactor .panels which formerly had to be arranged on bulkheads, on the ship's side, or
