WEEK'S REVIEW
Second Round Shield Ties To-morrow

distance had been covered when
3.292 was the resultant return. As the last quarter was clocked around 31 sees, the time for the full journey was quite satisfac- tory.
Piccalili was treated to a less- er distance, which he accomplish- ed in good style to finish the last quarter full of going in 30 secs. The time taken for the full trip was 2.55 seca. which, although no- thing to rave about, was consist- ently good. By virtue of this pony's adaptability, to cover in good time any job to which he is assigned I confidently expect to see him one of the best backed ponies in this year's Derby. Mr. Hynes and Mr. Mackle were most unfortunate in last year's event owing to the disinclination of their charge to face the barrier. Had Petorkin started I am sure there would have been a different tale to tell about the race.
The Athletic have six fixtures in hand and should earn full points in four of them, Police, South China, Kowloon, and R.A., but as we have already awarded the Navy two, we now have to consider their chances against the "Sets," and take a line through the K.0.5.B. The Athletic have lost three points to the "Scots" at Sookumpoo and the "Sets" have won three from the K.O.S.B.'s on the same ground which points to the Chinese losing their game against the "Sets", and, if such proves to be the case, the Athletic will finish up with 30 points.
Somersets Chances
The last team in the picture are the Somersets with eight games in hand. At present they hold 17 points and provided they account for the Club, R.A.. Recreio, St. Joseph's and Kowloon, 43 they should do, their total will be 27, plus two from the Athletic is 29 and two off the leaders, with South China to meet twice.
To sum up, based on all four teams playing up to form, the "Scots" have only the "Sets" to fear: The latter alde in my opinion are strongly placed and should win Carnation Eve. This pony the Senior Trophy, provided they comes down from Shanghal with can snatch three points from South a very good reputation, and his China, by the margin of one point, record shows some very satisfac- but no more catastrophes like the tory performances in fields where one against the Police in mid Apollo has been amongst the run- January must occur if the E.O.S.B. nors, I have been told he la a are to be deprived of holding the crazy runner and is likely to dishonour in India. play fits of bad temper when run-

Peacock, the Navy centre forward, took the field for the first time this season and scored twice, the re- maining success coming from Cart wright.
King's Courier, who arrived in Hong Kong just before the end of the last gymkhana season, is very fit just now and will be a sure winner in short distance races at the annual meeting.

To-morrow's Shield Ties
The Senior Shield holders for 1929 are drawn to meet the R.A. at Sonkumpoo and a particularly keen struggle should be witnessed In to-morrow's second round tie. South China lost their League fix-
ture with the "Gunners" on Janu- ary, 11 on the same ground by the odd goal in three, but on their own ground at Caroline Hill ran out winners by three to one. With the "Gunners" having ground advant- age and South China a little stronger, it would not surprise me if these sides have to meet again on Caroline Hill with South China qualifying as semi-finalists.
At Kowloon the Police will take the field against the home side on the Railway ground. These elevens met in a League fixture on the
same
ground this mason and shared four goals. Kowloon have
won the Shield four times in the last seven seasons, and as they are evidently Shield fighters, my voto goes to them.
