Chinese, Li Shing-san (28) of Toi Shan, was charged with the double larceny of eight pieces of clothing. There was an alternative charge of unlawfully receiving, to which he pleaded guilty.

Detective Sergeant Fowlie, for the prosecution, said that the de- fendant was arrested by a Chinese| policeman in Hamilton Street at 2 o'clock this morning, when in his possession the clothing was found.

Questioned by the Magistrate as to how the thief could gain en- trance to the flat, Sergeant Fowle replied that the only possible chance | was by climbing the waterpipes, and reaching the verandah where the clothing was hanging out to dry. The total value of the stolen pro- perty was $17.

Mr.' Whyte-Smith convicted and sentenced the thief to three months' jail with hard labour on each charge, the terms to run consecutively.

On hearing the sentence the pri- soner exclaimed "I have never been in jail before!"
