A YEAR'S TASK

Professor Falk began his search for the inlluenza germ on December 12, 1928, during the height of an epidemic.

Various experts of Chicago University's bacteriological de- parlament were mobilised said to number 18). They gathered speci mens and isolated and tested more than 3,800 different microbes in the Arst six weelts, gradually reducing them to eight general types. They used more than 125 monkeys for their experiments.

Now Professor Falk has announc ed at a meeting of the Bacteriology Club of the university that he has isolated 1hr

"We hope," he added, "to be able to perfect a vacene from dead microbes of the germ which may be absorbed through the mucous mem brine of the nose and throat and thus effect a cure."

Professor Falk warns people that they must not expect too much from the discovery. "Chain-Microbe" & Blood-Poisoning Influenza, 80 far as our present knowledge extends, is like a very severe cold which poisons the whole system.

About once in every quarter of a century it is suddenly changed into a devastating plague which sweeps the world. The most recent of Buch "pandemics" (or world-wide plagues) was the one which occurr- ed in the winter of Armistice year, when there were more than 114,000 deaths in Britain: To date this year in England and Wales, there have been 14,843.

I see that Professor Falk has us 125 monkeys in the course of his task. Research work on that scale has never been done before and such experiments are very valuable. Work has been done with rabbits, but mankeys appear to be far more satisfactory
