MR. BREWER MAKES
FINAL PLEA
ELOQUENT SPEECH FROM DOCK BY ACCUSED
"NOT A FRAUD"
ENTHUSIASM OF A LAWYER TO
CREATE A PRECEDENT
Mr. Noel Instone Brewer, barrister-at-law, and President of the Instone Banking Corporation, who had been found "Guilty" by a jury at the last Criminal Sessions, on a charge of making a false statement contrary to the Perjury Ordinance, appeared before his Honour the Puisne Judge (Mr. Justice J. R. Wood) at the Supreme Court this morning to receive his sentence,
Mr. Irewer, who was brought into the dock by a warder, looked very calm and collected. He carried a bundle of papers in his hand. Mrs. Brewer was also present before the Court sat, and showed signs of agitation, dabbing her eyes with her handkerchief at frequent intervals. She inter left the Court room.
Before sentence was passed, Mr. Brewer asked permission to make a speech in mitigation, and, on his Lordship assenting to the request, prisoner reviewed the history of the bank in detail and enbatically maintained that he was not a fraud.

HIS "PAINFUL DUTY'
Before his Lordship passed sen- tence. Mr. Brewer said:-
فر
My Lord, I have been fcund guilty on this charge, but to be guilty on this charge may vary from a degree of culpability to which is little more
than technical. There is a consider- able amount of evidence which normally would have come

counts, dealing mainly with the question as to whether the busi ness was run fraudulently and whether Mr. Brewer himself was fraudulently inclined. That evi- dence was not directly relevant to the question of whether there was guilt or no guilt on the first court and was therefore not brought in on the hearing of the first count,
bat since it is very relevant to
the question of whether I am
guilty or not, Isk My Lord that that evidenes be adduced before
I ask for mitigation.
A Great Privilege
Mr. Justice Wood:-I am grani- ing you a great privilege Mr. Brewer, in hearing you at nil and
I don't propose that the matter
you have suggested be made public. If you wish to speak I will not prevent you.
