ELECTRICAN YIELDS TO TEMPTATION

STOLE WHILST WORKING IN EUROPEAN'S HOUSE

GOOD CHARACTER

this

At the Kowloon Magistracy morning, before Mr. T. S. Whyte- Smith, an electrician of the Kowloon Docks was charged with the theft of 34.40, the property of Hr. H. Marriott, 26, West Terrace, Hunghon,

According to the pollee, the defen- Įdant War' sent to the complainant'a house to repair some light fixtures, and during the time that he was working Mrs. Marriott went out. Before ahe left, however, she gave the couk-boy a five dollar hill to buy something, ard the chango was $1.10, which sum he left on the table.

On Mrs. Marriott's return she found that the money was missing and at once reported it to her husband who, at noon, when the workers were leav¬ ing the Docks, managed to pick on the right man, and searched him.

In the upper pocket $1.40 was found while in lower one $3 was discovered. The man admitted that it was not his. The Magistrate said that it was a Įserious thing to steal while one had the advantage of being in the room alone. He was a trusted man, and therefore should not have stolen.

P. C. Farrell intimated that the police wanted an example made in this case, but his Worship on being inform- ed by Mr. Marriot that the defendant was a good wurker with six years' ser- vice with the Docks, and had a very good character, said he could not ex- actly make it an example, owing to those points in his favour.

However, his Worship believed the [defendant's explanation that it was a sudden temptation, and passed sen. tence of one month's hard labour.

One Charge Leads to

Another

When a Chinese private watch- man employed at the Foo Lung Contractors, Prince Edward Road, was brought before Mr. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning, it was intimated by Inspector Phillips that the defen- dant would have a further charge against him of returning before his banishment term had expired. The police did not know that at the time of the arrest.

The charge preferred against the man to-day was that he as- saulted an earth coolie.

The defendant who is on bail was remanded' for 24 hours.

RAID ON A HOUSE

That Yeung Kee. (42) very dangerous man to be at large was the remark of Detective-Ser-

Keant Humphreys at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning, when the man was charged before Mr. T. S. Whyte-Smith with entering 17, Haiphong Road, and stealing from there a basket, with cloth- ing to the value of $10,

Defendant pleaded guilty. Sergeant Humphreys stated that- the defendant, at about 10 a.m. yesterday, broke into the house when all the occupants were out

at work at the Kowloon Godown. One of the men returned to the house to see the door flung open and the defendant ransacking the basket in a room. The defendant was then arrested.

Regarding his character, Ser- geant Humphreys said that he had been banished on three occasions, but had completed all three terms. He was a persistent criminal.

Sentence of six months' jall, with hard labour was passed.

CYCLE THEFTS

Indian Lad To Be Flogged

IN FATHER'S PRESENCE

At the Kowloon Magistracy to-day an Indian boy, All Bux, 11 years of age was charged with the theft by bailee of a bicycle from the Wing. Sang Cheung Shop at Winchal,

Mr. A. R. Covey appeared for the defence and entered a plea of guilty. Detective Sergeant Humphreys pressed the case and told his Worship that it was a particularly hard thing for the Police when bicycles got stolen from shops, because It was so difficult to. trace them again.

Mr. Covey submitted that ho lad should be flogged, as a punishment and; a lesson, in the presence of Sergeant

Humphreys by his father.

Mr. Covey agreed..

Sergeant Humphreys stated that the fok of another bicycle shop, also in Wanchai, had also lost a bicyce and came to Court to claim it.

This second bicycle, a second- hand one, was sold to a Chinese schoolboy-of-18,-for-the-bargain price f $6. The first bicycle was sold for $5 by the lad, to another schoolboy, but an instalment of $10 was to follow.

The Magistrate held that the

second bicycle purchaser's bargain

verged on dishonesty. He did very wrong to bargain with a boy of 11 years.

His Worship made an order for both bicycles to be returned to the respective shops, and ordered the defendant's father to pay $5 as compensation to the purchaser of the first blcycle.
