FINDING ORE WITH RADIO
Prospecting by radio has been simplified by the introduction of im- proved apparatus which already has located veins of ora to a depth of 500 feet (says "Poplar Mechanics). Trained engineers are required to operate the outfit, but it is not dif- ficult to handle, and its accuracy has been tested repeatedly, It employs the principle of electromagnetic in- duction. An electromagnetic field is sent out from a transmitter to a depth of several hundred feet. If an ore vein is within the radius of the field, a current is set up in the conductor, which, in turn, sets up a secondary fteld, and this is de- tected by a direction-finding ap- paratus. By further observations, It is understood that the anthe extent of the are vein is deter- nouncement of the titles of dance mined. The outfit consists of a music numbers broadcast by the radio transmitter, a power box and British Broadcasting Corporation the direction-finding set. A crew from outside their studios, which of four men is generally employed WAS discontinued at the end

System of Graft The B.B.C. discovered that it was being made the medium of an ex- tensive system of graft, while the public was being deprived of listen- ing to some of the best song and dance music.
It was found in 1927 that certain music publishers wore obtaining unfair publicity for their particu- lar numbers by the device of com- ing to secret arrangements with orchestra leaders, On the other 'band, music publishers who refus- ed to negotiate with certain chestra leaders were complaining that even when they published first- class numbers which the publie wanted to hear, orchestras refused to play them, and they never reach-. ed B.B.C. listeners.

Broadcasting authorities attempt- ed to solve the problem of "plug- ging," and to obtain an Improve- ment in their programmes, by joint action with the music publishers. An arrangement was made, but this proved ineffective and broke down last January.
When the announcements were stopped the B.B.C. was flooded with letters from listeners demanding to know the reason for the step and asking for the announcements to be resumed. The publishers were
