RUSSIAN PRODUCERS' VIEWS

THE

"ACCURATE IMITATION"

There is no artistle future for the talkies as now being made In America and Europe, according to M. V. I. Pudovkin, one of the most brilliant of the Russian film pro- ducers.

As the producer of auch pictures as "Light Over Asia," "The Last Days of St. Petersburg," and "Mother," his opinion is counted very highly in film circles, and he made his statement after a long | study of talking films in Berlin and

Paris.

"At best," he told the British United Press, "the talkies Are an

accurate Imitation of the legitimate theatre. No matter how far the technique la carried, it can never go beyond the limitations of ordinary acting. The Import- ance of the talkies are thus mére- ly commercial - they bring the theatre to those who are too for

Americans' Mistake

That, however, does not mean that M. Pudovkin considers sound of no value to the pictures, writes a British United Press correspon dent. On the contrary, when used properly, he considers that sound can become a powerful fac ter in raising the emotional quality and the artistic value of a film.

"The mistake American produc-

But if instead of synchronising word and act, in- stead of giving the thing iterally, sound were used only to clarify and deepen the author's intention, the producer would have one more means for heightening the emo- tional appeal of his subject,

HONG KONG TIDE

The tide-table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide-pre- dicting Machine, which includes 40 components for the better prediction analysis of the tidal observations, of tides, from the result of the taken at the Kowloon tidal observa tory under the direction of Dr. Doberck during the years 1887, 1888 and 1889.

The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences being very small.

The times of high and low-water must not be considered to coincide change of current, the two phenomena with the times of slack-water and being quite distinct
