London, Yesterday. The Colonial Office states that the Nigerian disturbances were in Owerri, Ogoja the provinces of and Calabor-Reuter.
Native Unrest
Rugby, Yesterday. Questioned in Parliament re garding the native unrest in South Kartern Nigeria. Dr. Drummond Shiels. Under-Secretary for India, said that, according to scanty in- formation received the cause of the disturbances was the assess- which involved counting ment, the women in certain districts, This gave rise to the wholly un- founded rumour that it was in- tended to impose direct taxation en the women, whilst the recent lowering of prices paid by mer- chanta for native produce was a further contributing factor. On December 11 large crowds 45- |sembled and, in spite of assur
ances that there was no intention of taxing the woman, they pro- ceeded to loot and destroy pro- perty at various places in the neighbourhood of Aba and Opobo. Additional police were brought in to deal with the situation and were reinforced by detachments of the Royal West African Frontier Force.
No More Troops
On December 15 the Governor reported there were sufficient troups and police on the spot to deal with the situation. On Decem- ber 16 he reported that it had been necessary to introduce addi- tional troops and police, and the rioters had attacked officials at Opobo, where it had been neces- sary for the police to fire, caus- ing 18 casualties, which, he re- gretted to say, were all women. It was not stated how many were
