what the matter was: it was not that 'Church' history was dull, but that what was then presented to me 8 burh was not really history. Whether the present volume is dull, or even history, it will be for others to pronounce. I only know that have enjoyed the writing of the hue and ery after new discovery, the following up of hitherto unoticed clues, the delimitation of conflicting tendencies, the envisaging of inter- action between personality and cir- cumstance in testing situations, noting the intermittent fronies emergent in all things human.

The hypothesis of a primitive diversity in Christian institutions may, or may not, succeed in com- mending itself to the judgment of scholan; but in the meantime it has, at any rate, one merit: it is not likely to add fuel to the flames of ecclesiastical controversy. Indeed, if my hypothesis is correct, then: in the classic words of Alice in Wonderland, Everyone has won, and all shall have prizes'. At any rate, I am entitled to presume that among those who profess and call themselves Christians-there' will be but few of those unfortunates, to whom it is no satisfaction to be right unless they can thereby put others in the wrong.
