CHINESE WINE

BROUGHT HERE FROM TIENTSIN

440 BOTTLES DISAPPEAR

"They are two clear cases of mmug- gling."

That was the description laid down by Detective Sergeant Humphreys at the Kowloon Magistracy to-day in the case in which the cook and store-keep- er of the B. & S. ... "Kwei Chow" were charged with the unlawful pos- ression of 18 and 102 bottles, respec- tively, of Chinese wine, on which duty had not been paid.

Detective-Sergeant Humphreys stat- ed that the bottles of wine were very cleverly concealed, and that 840 bot- ties, which were bidden under the cargo, had since disappeared-prob auly thrown away. They bought the wine in Tientsin for a cheap prica and then sold it locally at a profit. Tien- tain wine was very good compared with local wine.

The cook was oned $50 or four wecks' jail in default, while the second man was Antd $250 or four months' hard labour.

The wine was confiscated.
