A MORNING SHAVE

Criticisms of the Infant.

[By J. Jefferson, Farjeon, the Novelist and Dramatist]

Shaving always seems to me rather a private matter. I do not like to have poople around me. One

commits all sorts of little moral lapses, and one does not look one's beat. I do not know how.the happy young men in the advertisements of shaving soaps get such a pleasant expression. .I cannot. And so, as I have said, I like to shave in private.

But very young people, who have yet to learn about life, enjoy the spectacle of an older person shav. ing. They regard the man with the razor as a cross between a comic clown and a juggler, who may at any moment do something scream- ingly funny or screamingly awful.. Interest is intense in the juvenile mind whether a man soapsuds his nase or gashes his cheek. It is all delightful.

I did my best to evade my small nephew, when he came to spend a week with us, but one day he beat me. He heard me say I was going into the bathroom to shave, and he hung like ivy round the door till I went. And he slipped in after

me.

"Won't Nursie be looking you?" I asked.

"No," he replied.

An uneasy atmosphere prevail- ed. War had not been declared. but there were rumours about. Suddenly, my better spirit prevail- ad. I realised that I was a great big man--compared: with Arthur, anyway-and that he was a very little boy. Why should not the little lad be entertained! .

I took up the, shaving-brush and anade a playful pass at him. He retreated quickly to the door and bumped his head, I realised that his daddy didn't do that.

Arthur was now weeping. "It was only my fun, old man," I explained.

Arthur went on weeping. "Come and watch me shave: this bit," I coaxed.

Arthur atill wept.

"Has Artle-Wartle got a little bumpie-wumple?" I ask. "Shall

we call Nursie-Wursie?"

The affect of this was horrible. The weeping increased in volume. Evidently Nursie-Wursie could not cure Artle Wartie. But nor could Uncle-Wunkle.

If there's nothing to do it's no good trying to do It. I proceeded with my shaving-while the wailing continued. We were both worked up. My nerves were rapidly anap-

gave myself a bad cut.

"No." he insisted. "She doesn't know I'm here."

"Oh!" I said.

It' seemed correct, somehow. Correct or not, that was that. I rosigned myself, and turned on the tap. Arthur looked at the stream Intently, tip-toeing to do it, and then told me, "That's water."

“Yes, I thought it was,” I replied. Arthur stared at me as though sur- prised that I should only have thought it was, I realised that subtlety would not go. "You're sure it's not ink?" I suggested.

"Confound it!" I cried.
