SCATHING REMARKS ABOUT US. INTERFERENCE

The position in regard to the settlement of the Manchurian dis- pute is still obscure, and no official confirmation of the signing of a protocol between Russia and China has been issued from Nanking. Indeed, official Chinese circles in Harbin apparently do not con- sider that the Taui-Simanovsky agreement is conclusive, and anti- cipate that further parleys will be necessary before it can become effective.

The action of the United States and of France in drawing the attention of the Soviet to its obligations under the Kellogg Pact to renounce war, is regarded in Moscow as "unfriendly.” Mean- while, no reply has been received by Great Britain to its Memorandum.

LORD BIRKENHEAD OPPOSES RUSSIAN ALLIANCE

PROPAGANDA MENACE

ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY ON RELIGIOUS WAR

In the House of Lords yesterday a lively debate was initiated oy Lord Birkenhead on the question of the resumption of relations with Soviet Russia in which several Conservative Peers joined.

Lord Birkenhead, who moved a resolution that the resumption of relations was at present undesirable, attacked the Soviet Gov- ernment's subversive acts of spreading anti-British propaganda throughout the Empire. The motion was carried by 48 votes to 21. The Archbishop of Canterbury drew attention to the Soviet's attitude towards Christianity and inferred that representations could be made to alleviate the sufferings of religious people in Russia.
