THE CHINA MAIL,

ST. ANDREW'S DAY

CHURCH PARADE BY THE SCOTTISH CO. H.K.V.C.

SERMON ON NOSTALGIA

St. Andrew's Day was observed by the Scottish Company of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps yesterday with a Church Parade at the Union Church, Kennedy Road, st which members of the St. Andrew's Society were also present, headed by the Chieftain, Mr. A. H. Ferguson. There was a large con- gregation.

The Scottish Volunteers made a very smart turn out, about 50 men marching to the Church from Head- quarters under the command' of H. R. Forsyth.

The service was conducted by the Rev. F. C. Young, pastor of the Union Church, who gave an inspir- ing address on "Love of Country.”

He said in part:-

There was no place more sacred to the Jew than Jerusalem, and when, after long marching he was brought a captive to Babylon, he could not quieten within him the yearning and the love for his distant home. The home of his, beart was Jerusalem for ever calling to him across the wilderness of sand and hill. That love he passed on to his children.

for

Thwarted Hopes Paul in .much later years weaved that love of country into his appeal, laying hold of 4. national characteristic, when he spoke of a Colony he spoke of the nearest and dearest thing to the hearts of the people to whom he wrote. It was and still is a pas sionate affection, all the, more passionate because of so many thwarted hopes. There is some thing wistful and pathetic in the thought of the members of that ancient race ceming from the ghettos of America, Russia and grey stones of the temple wall in England and crouching beneath the

Jerusalem and crying, "How long oh Lord, how long." Although of a different race, we, too, know the persistence of that homing instinct. We can think of others like us, thousands of our kinsmen, in the bush of Australia, on the prairies of Canada, in the wilda of Africa; Colonists with the strength of young nations, free with the freedom of untrammelled states, but;

They learned from their wistful mother,

To call old Britain home. Such an instinct makes us one. Foets have caught that native instinct and tuned it to the haunting melody of words-Browning with his longing for English lanes and that sweetest of all singers, Robert Louis Stevenson. He was banished

Honourable History Voluntary exiles we may be, but our love goes out to the countries from whence we came and whither we hope to return. But it is more than the love of place. It is the love of a long and honourable his- tory, the veneration of a series of customs and traditions which not we alone but the world has proved to be good, and beat a fidelity to Ideals which we should hate to de- base. I am thinking of their benevol ence. In St. Andrew's Society such an article, has long held place, the protection of the widow, the relief of the orphan when with, kindly charity their needs are met. We remind ourselves that this society is something more than social. We

though a remind ourselves as well that al-

stranger is not forgotten; in fact national society the

we think of their being no strang ers but that there is a hospitality of mind to every race, and that where it can there is a willingness to give a helping hand quite apart from race or clan.

So in those days we are national that in the end we might be inter- national. With gracious memories of a homeland and In loyalty to her we would take the choicest of her gifts and yield them freely to others. One of the ways open to us for contributing our best to the world is through the nation our gifts flow through those channels.

Speaking of the character of Scotland, Mr. Young said:

it is not unfitting that festivities of this week should end here in a service of thankfulness and praise, that the Chieftain with his commit tee and the Scottish Company of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps should in the House of God remember with gratitude the way he has led them, and seek for his blessing and grace upon the Society and the Company to which they belong.
