Cash sweeps at the Jockey Club's ninth extra race meeting

Ponies Gallop In Good Style On Firm Going held on Saturday

THE DIVIDENDS

Favourites had a remarkably lean time on Saturday when the Hong Kong Jockey Club's ninth extra meeting (the last but one) of the season was held at Happy Valley. Only two out of nine justi- fied the confidence placed in them by punters; one of these was odds on and the other was responsible for a dividend of just over

evena.

Five of the other best-backed ponies falled to secure a place in the pari-mutuel betting; and the other two managed a second (Nouk. hail) and a third (Majestic Hall) between them!

SOME CLOSE FINISHES

The sport was all that could be desired. The weather was de- lightful. A firm going, the ponies galloped in fast time, Boxing Eve making a splendid performance. Fields were more often big than small. The racing was keen and --thanks the handicappers-

to Anishes were close.

All the elements that go to- wards a successful meeting were forthcoming, thus auguring well for the final

this programme Saturday, when the Extra Season Champions is to be decided.

The Grandstand

On the whole, the starting was not as exemplary as of yore but every event was enjoyed. Construc. tional work on the members' grand- | stand had been completed, so that there was plenty of room. With the additional facilities for betting underneath, backers had a comfort- able day even if there were many surprising (and costly) reversals of form.

An innovation in a new starters' board proved satisfactory."

The Army men who worked it.burrowed into the ground in front of it and maintained telephonic communica- tion with the weighing room, thus tending to posting names weights with greater despatch.

The Tolalisator

and

The task of re-building all the stands in order to accommodate the new totalisator is drawing to a close and the first signs of a lawn

in the enclosure were forthcoming on Saturday.

With three firsts and a second,

Mr. R. H. Charles had a glorious day. Mr. G. U. da Roza was next beat among the jockeys with two victories to his credit. Mr. Heard had one winner and two seconds and was also first in the unofficial hong race. Mr. Arnold won the novices' event in fine style.
