THE LIFE OF A SHIP'S DOCTOR

Drama Of Midnight Call From Dying Man

"A MALE SYRIAN"

Saving Life In The Middle Of An Ocean

It is quite a mistake to suppose that a ship's doctor has nothing to do but wear an attractive uniform. Why, ours might just as well have been a general practitioner the night we crossed the equator.

It started with a wireless call from a tramp steamer, just before dinner. They had a very ill man on board and wanted us to fly to the rescue.

If only all the people who make noises in Parliament about class distinctions could go to sea for a change! They wouldn't have à leg left to stand on.

ONLY A GREASER

This man was only a grease which means some one who does messy jobs to an engine but the big mail steamer turned right off its course without a murmur, he had been an admiral.

It wasn't easy getting the boat up again, for the waves seemed deter mined to crash it against the aide of the ship.

RUSSIA REQUIRES NEW SHIPS

The situation can only be satisfac torily developed if the necessary securities for the payment of £20,000,- 000 sterling for now tonnage in the next are years are forthcoming.

It will recalled that the report of the Anglo-Russian Committes ou the British trade delegation to Russia committe is, therefore, of the epialon concluded with ration

But how do ships meet each other in the middle of a plain expanse of ocean, without the restige of a rock or anything to steer by 7

Our piece of sea that night was ex- actly alike all over; and as the equa- tor really is only on Imaginary line, even that wasn't any help. However, the chief officer seemed quite con- fident, and in the meantime the doc- tor wireleased to the tramp pooplo, and told them all the things they must not on any account do to the man unless they wanted to kill him before we arrived.

The next event was that a poor iittle Mother Carey's chicken dropped exhausted on the deck

at the doc-

HAPPY EVENT

Then, some time after dinner, a steward came and whispered in his ear and he got up and walked off to the steerage. We had known since the start of the voyage that a happy event was expected there some time

or other.
