Mr. Justice Scrutton, giving judg- mant in favour of Messrs. Fry's in the Tolley appeal case, expressed the opinion that the publication complained of was capable of a defamatory meaning, but the dam- jages were excessivo. He thought there should be a new trial, but Justices Greer and Slesser took a different view, and thought that Fry's were entitled to succeed

Court has allowed Mesars. Fry's appeal against the judgment for £1,000 damages for libel, awarded Mr. C. J. H. Tolley, the famous amateur golfer, in July last.

IMPROVING CANTON

Contract Signed For Suspension Bridge

Canton, Yesterday.

As previously reported, Canton is to have à suspension bridge from the Bund at the end of Wei Sun Maloo across the Pearl River to Honam Island. It. is now learned that a contract for the construc- tion of the bridge was aigned between the Canton Municipality and Messrs. Andersen, Meyer and Co. on October 12, at a cost of $1,095.000 of which bargain, money of $50,000 has already been paid by the City.
