INTERPORT LAWN
TENNIS
NORTHERNERS' SCORE FIRST VICTORY
court
PLAY BELOW STANDARD
Shanghai won both matches down for play yesterday on the Ilong Kong Cricket Club
in the interport lawn tennis competition with Hong Kong. Altogether. there are five engagements between the hudies of the two sides and a similar number between the men. The Northerners' victory yesterday con- prised a ladies' singles and a men's doubles.
The "No. 3'4" of the ladies' teams met first in a strong sun. Miss A. Firth (Shanghai) beat Mrs. Miles the second 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Then men's pairs clashed. 3 h. Wade, the visiting captain, was partnered by Paul Kong, who played for China in Davis Cup matches in America. They defeated Major R. II. Lucas, R.A.M.C. and Dr. R. E. Tottenham 6-1, 6-8, 6-2, 6-1.
The standard of play, comparas tively, was not of the highest. While the ladies appeared to be slightly affected by the issue at stake, the men on both sides were below their best form.
Ladies' Display Mrs. Miles played valiantly and counter-attacked to advantage in the second set. She was weak on the backhand, however, and Miss¡ Firth concentrated on that side. Mrs. Miles relied mainly ON A
esting even when it was rather one-sided,
Although Hong Kong only cap- tured three games in the last two sets, Lucas and Tottenham tenn- ciously contested every point and
deuce was reached more than ance in many games.
Governor to Altend H.E. the Governor (Sir Cecil
K.C.M.G.) anel Clementi,
Lady Clementi bave signified their inten- tion of attending to-day.
At 2.15 p.m. the second strings meet, in the ladies' doubles will Mrs. Miles and Mrs. James will re- present Hong Kong. The visiting pair will probably be Mrs. F. Staford Smith and Miss T. Collace.. Not later than 3.15 p.m., the first string men's doubles will commence. 3. A. Ramjahn and H. D. Rumjahn (title holders, Hong Kong) will meet Gordon Laim and R. Carna- varro (Shanghai).
To-morrow's Game Play begins, also
at 2.15 p.m. to-morrow the last day at the H.K.C.C.). A change has been made in the "No. 1" ladies' singles. Instead of Mrs. Stafford Smith, Miss
H. Crawford will meet the local
champion, Mr. R. E. Tottenham. M. W. Lo (as holder of the singles championship, Hong Kong) will play Gordon Lum of Shanghai.
Miss Enid Lo Hong Kong's No. 2) will meet Mrs. Stafford Smith at Sunday, therefore, the K.C.C. and not Miss Crawford as previous ly announced.
