Shanghai won both matches down for play yesterday on the Ilong Kong Cricket Club

in the interport lawn tennis competition with Hong Kong. Altogether. there are five engagements between the hudies of the two sides and a similar number between the men. The Northerners' victory yesterday con- prised a ladies' singles and a men's doubles.

The "No. 3'4" of the ladies' teams met first in a strong sun. Miss A. Firth (Shanghai) beat Mrs. Miles the second 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Then men's pairs clashed. 3 h. Wade, the visiting captain, was partnered by Paul Kong, who played for China in Davis Cup matches in America. They defeated Major R. II. Lucas, R.A.M.C. and Dr. R. E. Tottenham 6-1, 6-8, 6-2, 6-1.

The standard of play, comparas tively, was not of the highest. While the ladies appeared to be slightly affected by the issue at stake, the men on both sides were below their best form.

Ladies' Display Mrs. Miles played valiantly and counter-attacked to advantage in the second set. She was weak on the backhand, however, and Miss¡ Firth concentrated on that side. Mrs. Miles relied mainly ON A
