A British Wireless message from Rugby, to hand to-day, states:-

SIR CECIL'S CAREER

Sir Cecil Clementi, like the late, Sir Henry May, began his Colonial service in this Colony. He serv ed here from 1899 til 1912, and shortly after his marriage to Miss Eyre, daughter of the then Commodore. he was transferred to British Gulana as Colonial Secretary. His nex: appointment was to Ceylon in 1922 as Colonial Secretary, a post which had also been filled for some years by his immediate predecessor, as

Gov ernor, Sir Reginald Stubbs. Educated at Oxford, Sir Cecil had a distinguished, university career, and having an inclination for Oriental studies. won the Boden Sanskrit scholarship. It may be recalled here that Sir Cecil Clementi's term of service in the Colony was broken on three occasions-firstly in 1902, when he was secondod for special service under the Government of India; then in 1903, when he was engaged on special famine relief work in Kwangai, and finally in 1909, when he was a member of the International Opium Confer- ence which sat in Shanghai. Two outstanding items in to-day's news of the intest war in South China make interesting reading.

One is that heavy reinforcements are being assembled by the National Government in Nanking to assist the Kwangtung loyalists against the Ironsides and the Kwangsi-itee; and that a vernacular news agency which circulated this bit of good cheer to the people of Canton has been drastically dealt with..

The other concerns a novel personal challenge to trial by com- bat. In effect, the No. 1 Ironside has invited one of the Canton Generals to meet him in a defined encounter and thereby save the city from the horrors of war.
