[By Our Political Correspondent]

To-day's news shows less chance of war in the provinces adjacent to Hong Kong being averted. Further, fighting (presumably in a small way) is reported to have broken out already-at a time when trade should improve for the season before China New Year.

From Wuchow, the Royal Naval authorities report that the place remains, quict for the present.

Yesterday some troops were sent down the West River into Kwangtung, it is added. These must be Cantonese under General Chan Chai-tong (Commaner-in-Chief of Kwangtung and Kwangsi), who is supporting the National Government of Nanking. The num- ber is not mentioned but the men are probably being withdrawn to re- inforce Kwangtung's defences against the Ironsides who are moving into the NW. of Kwangtung, with Canton as their goal.

REFUSED TO FIGHT

"Fighting between General Chan | of China and have more active ser- Chal-tong and General Lui Woon- yim is alleged to have taken place somewhere Rear Kweiping," the Naval wireless states.

This means that the Cantonese and Kwangai-ites under Lui Woon- yim (who, until November 16, was an ally of the Cantonese) are de- finitely estranged, the Kwangal-ites having refused to fight the Iron- sides.

BASE OF OPERATIONS Some Kwangsi troops under Lui Woon-yim

have are believed to

a small town reached Mongkong, about 30 miles above Wuchow, on the West River. If this is correct, the Kwangi-ites are moving on Wuchow, hitherto the base of operations for the pro-National Government allies against the Iron- sides.

"There are still a large number of Nationalist forces in Wuchow," the message concludes. These men are Cantonese sent up from Canton to oppose the Ironsides, Now that the Kwangsi-ites have turned against them, the Cantonese are holding to Wuchow against the Kwangat divisions.

AN EYE ON KWANGSI Since the turn of the Kwangai- ites against them, the Cantonese are dividing their units into three columna, One is that at Wuchow, to "keep an eye" on Kwongal, At

vice than any other unit in South China. And there is sound evidence that they have been TO: conciled to a faction at the moment out of power.

General Chang Fa-kuel is said to have arrived at an understanding with Li Taung-jen and Wong Shlu- hung.

the pirates have again become very active.

Owing to the transfer of troops from Kwangtung and Suikiang.

The steamer "Sun Kwei-yik” plying between Szewui and Waitsap was plundered on November 9 at a place known as Pailamkun, states the Canton News Agency.

The pirates, who were disguised as passengers, killed two guards on board and secured entire control of the vessel, carrying away valuables and goods amounting to $20,000 in addition to over seventy passengers being kidnapped for ransom.
