It has been found, for example, that the increase of the compression ratio in the motor has succeeded not only in neutralising the added weight of the car and the increased tyxu knon-hibited, the party visited avery depart- slons, but has a marked effect on gase- line economy. Ownery who actually have attempted to accurately check their gasoline consumption with the six cylinder models found that they were able to obtain economies in ex- cess of 20 miles to the gallon of petrol. In fact. the average economy of a 4,000 mile trip, mountains, detours and rough ronds, was in excess of 18 miles to the gullon, carrying in this case a ful five-passenger load. Petrol mile #go obtained with the four cylindered models was, of course, even more phen mental,
Carburettor Redesigned
The carburetter in both the four und sixes also has been completely re- designed to suit the higher compres sion of the motor. The economy results shown by the Whippets are all the
1. more significant when coupled with a higher top speed and greater pick-up and other activity in traße. In tests conducted by company engineers with a standard four man carrying five passengers up Cove Mountain the speed of the car was reduced to between 10 anil 11 miles an hour at the steepest point of the grade and yet under these circumstances the engine fired as evenly as it would at 20 miles per hour and there was no evidence of loading or fatness as the engine speed in- creused due to the reduction grade.

A 16-Cylinder Model
In view of the influence that racing has had in the development of the automobile, it is interesting to note that Bugatti, one of Europe's foremost designers of racing and sports cara, has just put into production a 16. cylinder supercharged engino of special design having two vertical banks of eight cylinders each. The engine will be used in a sports-type chassis and will be run in numerous European road races and competitions this year: the resuits obtained will ho interesting from the point of view of engine de- velopment, as regards the number of cylinders, at least.
