PLANT

REMOTE CONTROL OF ELECTRIC MACHINERY

QUITE SELF-CONTAINED

ma-

Remate control of electric chinery on board ship is one of its strongest recommendations, and the important function of it is its ability to supply pumping power in any part of the vessel. Powerful bilge pumps, for example, may be placed at the bottom, capable of dealing with al- most any inflow of water, while at the same time the mators themselves. are high up above the normal load water-line and can take their current either from the main generators down in the engine-room, and should. these go out of action, from the nuxiliary generators in conjunction with storage batteries up in the "uperstructure. It la almost inevit able that such electricity should be supplied by Diesel-driven generators, because they

entirely Beit-

contained. In fact, while the naval architect naturally likes to keep down his top weights as much as possible, there is a growing tendency for ships to have a large auxiliary power-room un in the superstructure.

Wireless

בה

Increase in the use and application of wireless telegraphy is to some extent responsible for this, and especially when the wireless outfit be comes a separate

and special chanical department, as is the case in the "Bremen," and as is rapidly be- coming so in a number of other large high-speed liners. The ideal vessel would be able to operate the whole of her deck gear with the engine-room of flooded and the 'nuxiliary generator acta out control.

We read of the difficulties which are still being on- countered in salvage work on the "Celtic."

The "Celtic" flad this ship heen electrically equipped and powered as regards her deck gear, it seems resaunable to sug- gest that not only would a greater portion of her cargo have been salved. but also many of the difficulties now being encountered might never have had to be taken into account at all. We know of many passenger liners (steam-driven) built during the last few years in which a stand-by Diesel generator set has been installed, but in cases this is of inadequate

many power and placed in an awkward situa- tion. In one instance it is fitted in a small compartment abaft the steer ing engine.

Junior's Duty

It is of a type which the makers now regard as entirely obsolete, and on that account does not function very well. An even more ancient com- pressor is employed to supply

the starting air, and it is the duty of a during the voyage-usually every junior engineer to run it once or twice Saturday morning.

the Diesel is not regarded as a serious part of the day's work, and It is un- ilkely that the generator either would, could, be of much use in emergency. In other instances some particularly unfortunate hot bulb en- gines have been selected for the same work-and have not worked at all! The emergency deck generating plant is an essential part of the ship's equipment to-day and it is important that it should be made to carry its full load for at least eight hours dur ing the course of every voyage.
