SYMPATHY WITH CHINÀ

Kyoto, Yesterday.

At the Conference last night, Dr. Nitobe presented the Japanese statement, in which he reviewed how, with an open mind, which he characterised as "the internationalism of the Japanese mind," Japan had tried to absorb Western knowledge and wisdom, and what efforts she had made to prepare herself for the place she now oc- cupies in the comity of nations.

"THE CONQUEROR"

Dealing with the life story of Sam Houston, governor of Tennessee, and later Texas in the 19th century, is the Raoul Walsh production showing at the Majestic Theatre, Kowloon, to day at the usual times.

It is really an interesting film on the whole, and the old-fashioned dress and life are ably portrayed by the clever director.

William Farnum acts with great skill as Houston, the "undefeatable," whilst Jewel Carmen and Charles Clary strongly support him.

agents at Mukden to prevent it."

The Tsinan Affair

The statement recalls the Tainan in cident, and describes how "Chiness civilians were maltreated, and many killed, by Japanese soldiers." The ill feeling caused through the incident, it is added, is likely to persist for a little while longer."

Alluding to the killing of Chang To lin, the statement says that reports of technical experts show that it was con- sidered physically impossible for any Chinese or group of them to have car. ried out so large an undertaking at a point on the railway so strictly guard- ed by Japanese soldiers.

Other parts of the Chinese statement deal with the Chinese advance in var ous directions in recent years; and it is urged that the time has come for the abolition of extrality. This plea is ad vanced with much skill. The replies of "some of the Powers" to Nanking's Note of April 27, asking for abolition, proved a great disappointment to the Chinese people.
