Marine Employment·

The weekly employment returna of the Mercantile Mariao Service Asso- ciation certainly justify the foresight displayed in the annual report of that association, when the statement was made to the effect that the shipping industry is recovering from its long term of depression. During the week 18 members notified appointments to the following positions:-2 masters, 2 chief officers 8 second officers, & third officers, and 1 fourth officer.

For comparison purposes it may be mentioned that the ngures for the quarter ending June last were 257, as against 170 for the corresponding quarter of 1928. The coming into operation of the National Maritime Board agreement, that all vessels of 5,000 tone and upwards engaged in foreign-going trade from June 1929, shati carry threa certificated officers, undoubtedly has fostered the improvement situation. On September 1 next that employment part of the agreement becomes opera- five which applies to vessels at 2,750-5,000 tons gross, and, obviously will have the tendency of increasing the existing demand for officers, par- ticularly young men in possession of superior certificates,

HONG KONG TIDE

The tide-table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide-pro- dieting Machine, which includes 40 components for the better prediction of tides, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kowloor tidal observs- tory under the direction of Dr. Doberek during the years 1887, 188 and 1980.

The times and heights are given for Kowloos; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences being very amall,
