NO CHANCE
SENT "IN" AGAIN
"Do you realise that during the-pont three years you have been out of jall for only three months?"
This question was put by. Mr. E. W. Hamilton to
15-year-old Chinese
who was charged with attempting to pick the pocket of compatriot in
Wanchai.
Replying to the question the accused said "Yes" and added that he had no chance of going straight. The near- est that he had come of making an honest living was when an Assistant Warder in Victoria Jail took pity on him and bought him a hawker's licence. It war of little ase, however, because he did not have capital to buy goods. Accused added that he had no parents to look after him and often went with- |
out food.
The Magistrate Inquired what he should do with the lad, and Divisional Inspector Macdonald suggested giving! him 12 months in jail, remarking: "It is not a bit of good allowing him to be at large."
The Magistrate passed sentence of six months' hard labour, and on the Inspector's application, ordered the boy to undergo one year's Police surveillance when he came out of Jail.

Mr. Andrewes said that accused applied to the S.C.A. on July 80, 1928, for permission to open the Wah To Joss House on the ground floor of 87| Second Street, West Point.
Application Refused
The matter was referred to the Tem- ples Committee which after considera. tion refused the application.
The accused was given notice of the Committee's decision on December 81, and was required to close down with- in two months.
Later, it was found that accused was carrying on in spite of the notice, and the present proceedings were taken against him.
Accused was fined $10, and an order I was made for immediate closure of the Joos House.
Mr. Andrewes explained later that the Ordinance was passed for the pur- pose of controlling Chinese Temples and to prevent unscrupulous people from collecting money under the guise of charity and placing it in their own pockets.
