CUTTING TREES
VIGILANCE OF FORESTRY DEPARTMENT
AN ALLEGED BREACH
A Chinese villager appeared_at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday! before Mr. T. S. Whyte-Smith charg ed with the unlawful possession of and selling 75 cattles of pine and other wood near the gate of the old. Kowloon City Wall.
Mr. G. B. Twemlow, Asalatant Superintendent, Botanical And Forestry Department, stated that the defendant was caught selling the wood. Five others made good their escape..
Defedant asserted that he had cut the wood from a tree in his down by the typhoon of two months own ground, which had been blown
ago, and that he had 'a licence from the Forestry Department to cut wood.
Mr. Twemlow said that the de- fendant, although he held a licence, could not go and cut the branches of wild trees.
His Worship, pointing out that it would be interesting for the defen- dant to take Mr. Twemlow to the place where the tree was, remanded the case for 48 hours.
His Worship further pointed out. that the cutting of fresh trees was far, more serious than hacking the dead branch of a tree that had fallon or had been blown down,
