VIOLENT FLUCTUATIONS
COMMERCE
Under the chairmanship of Mr. Ho Kwong, a meeting of the Co-operative Society of the Twenty-four Merchants' Trade Guild, was held last evening. There was a large attendance, includ ing Messrs. Ho Iu, To Ste-tuen, Ll Yew-tong, Ng U-chan, Ho Yee-cheong, Chiu Chlu-fan, Lo' Lok-chow, Kwan Yik-che, Tsang Hew-man, Lo Woon- cho (secretary), and many others.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. H. Kwong sЯid:
Since I had the pleasure of address- which willing you a few days ago, we have seen violent Ructuations, and we are now on the downward grade. Already many merchants have pointed out how the drop will assist them in the clear- ance of import cargo, and needless to say exports will be very much assist- ed by a large number of dollars for sterling, etc. But this sharp fall must not be allowed to interfere with the necessity for permanently fixing the the parity of sliver as the currency Colony.

THE SKIPPER RETIRES
Valedictory
He's gone back to his home down under, and retires when he's
finished his leave;
"Will he ever come back here I wonder, with another soft job
up his sleeve?
He departed without any glory, no crowds there to witness
him go
No paper has told us the story-Oh, shame, that this should
be so!
No paper has yet drawn attention to the host of friends that
he had
None of them yet has made mention that he was a genial lad; Not one has remarked that his friends.wish him long years of
vigour. I trow;
For which I am making amends-Oh, ahame, that this should
be so!
It's not right that he thus should depart—unwritten-
unhonoured-unsung!
Except for these lines from the heart no word from the pen or
the tonguel
To tell him how he was respected, esteemed both by high and
by low
Always calm, cool and collected - Oh, shame that this should
be so
No doubt it's a little bit sad, this neglect of the newspaper here When they might have made him so glad, filling his heart with
good cheer:
I'm writing these few lines to cheer him, no doubt they will
soften the blow,
If he reads them I'd give five bob to hear him-Oh, shame, that
on this should be sol
He felt sure of the usual vapour, so he left fifty cents with a pat Who'd send him extracts from the paper, which same he could
show to bis gali **
But now that the money is wasted, to the core be'll be shaken
I know,..
In his album-they cannot be pasted Oh shame, that this
should be sol
So I'm writing this tribute to Squeaker, by which name he was ty known to his pals: ht
No one could be gentler or meeker though a devil he was with
the gals,
e
He's squeaking his way o'er the ocean, to the land where the
larriking grow
He'll arrive without any commotion - Oh, shame, that this
should be solve
He's smassed several thousands of quidlets ---he's got a fine Wakhouse of his own, "'.
Unmarried, without any kidlets, he wouldn't swop jobs for
a throne AMINO
He can lift up his voice in glad song now, not caring how
typhoons may blow,
Thanking God that has not in Hong Kong now thancing
Heaven that this should be sot
