PRISONER'S DEATH BANK NOTE SCARE IN

INQUEST ON CHINESE BERI BERI PATIENT

COMFORTABLE GAOL · LIFE

this

At the Conlrat Magistracy nning, Mr. E. W. Hamilton and a Coroner's jury. comprising Mesara W. E. Douglas (foreman), Ernest Walf, and R. M. Robarts, held an in quest on Mak Hoi, who was convicted at the Crimisal Sessions on June 20, 1927, and scutenced to five years' hard labour for the theft of a postal packet, and who died in the prison hospital at Victoria Gaol at 11 o'clock yesterday morning.

Dr. Alexander Cannon, Madical Of cer in charge of Victoria Gaol, said that he first saw prisoner on his admission to the jail on June 21, 1927. He was sufering from beri-beri on admission The prisoner was not ill then, so he was put to work in the printing shop. By the Coroner: In some cases, of beri-beri the ailment could last for years without the patient being ill.

The prisoner was placed under spe cial treatment for the six days he was in hospital. He died at 11 o'clock yes. terday in spite of all medical treatment. The cause of death was beri-beri. This was confirmed by a post mortem ex- amination which witness held subse quently.

"Glorified Nursing Home" Coroner: you had recommended His release on account of his ailment, do you consider that he would be alive now? No, a person suffering from beri-beri is able to drop dead at any moment.

Witness added that it was not his pokey to ask for release of a person suffering from beri-beri as the ailment was liable in some cases to last only a week and in others for many years. It was, in witness's opinion, to the pri soner's best interest to be in the pri son hospital, where he was in a "glori- fied nursing home?" (Laughter).

Coroner: He had not his liberty, though!

Dr. Cannon In the hospital he go treatment and fruit, which a person in his position cannot afford satside.

At this juncture the foreman of the jury intimated that they were satis. fied with the cause of the prisoner's death, and returned a verdict of "Death from natural causes.”
