Twice the "Graf Zeppelin" was in difficulties on its recent eastern trip, owing to a wudden fall in bar- ometric pressure which caused the
aneroid ordinary
altimeters to show a false helght. The Behm Echo Altimeter is independent of changes in atmispheric conditions, and on long trans-continental Hights, when the observer cannot always obtain meteorological re- ports, it enables him to check his aneroid altimeters for changes in barometric pressure at sea level.
An efficient means of communica- tion between the pilot and his observer,. permitting conversation to be carried
on without disturbance from extraneous noises, is furnish- ed by the new "Brown" Aero Megaphone. The sound waves are transmitted to the inner ear through the thin bony structure of the skull above the listener's ears, and

Firstly, it is fitted with a Diesel engine burning crude oil at less than 4d. a gallon; and secondly, it is the first locomotive in the world' to make use of the New Robertson Infinitely Automatic Variable Gear. Sumise Sanzet. What this latter means is fairly

well summed up in the makers' claim that it is "a locomotive that thinks for itself," and really after seeing it ran, one must admit that such a claim is justified. For the gear fitted to this locomotive changes itself up and down in ac- cordance with the load that is put upon the locomotive, the work of the driver being reduced to that of handling the engine throttle and the brake.
How these speed-changing pro- clivities are brought about are de- scribed fully in a leaflet which the makers have just published, and which bears the title which leads this note. Like most worth-while inventions, the gear, although do- ing a very complex job, carries it out in a very simple manner. More- over it has a minimum number of working parts, and most important of all, for over 90 per cent. of its life all these parts are locked solid
and do not move. Experience with this gear, previous to its being adopted for the K.S. Locomotive, shows that after a hundred thou- sand miles of hard work there ig scarcely sufficient wear on the friction surfaces to be measurable. Even so, these, the only wearing parts in the gear, can be replaced at an expenditure of a few shilings and in less than half an hour.
