Preliminaries

Next day at 10 am. both com- batants appeared the fencing club with their seconds and a woman surgeon who consented tu serve as "duel doctor." All the ladies were more or less nervous,

particularly the seconds. How- ever, the combatants were deter mined to fight to the finish.

In separate rooms the oppon- ents were stripped to the waist, bandaged by the seconds and given Jast-minute instructions. Mary had a friend who was an expert in duels who advised her to forget all rules of fencing and to attack as quickly as possible. Susanne was told mt to brandish the sword too much, but to look for a chance to break through the defence of her advesary.

A servant brought the swords, which were carefully examined by the seconds and washed in a dis- infecting lotion by the doctor. The combatants were then led to the fencing-room and placed at a distance of twelve feet from, each other while Miss Levay with a fencing-mask on her head and her body covered with a plastron. delivered the formal speech!
