BID FOR PASSENGER TRADE

London, July 19. In April, 1030, the Port of London Authority is going to make a serious bid to capture some of the big passen- ger

liner business of this country. There will then be a definite move to attract some of the big liners from Southampton to London, and it is hoped that the Union-Castle Line will use the Thames instead of the South Coast.

The Big Boating landing-stage at Tilbury is complete. But the L.M.S. Company has not finished the railway connections on land. These will be com- pleted next April, and, with the wait- ing-rooms and Customa "department, will provide facilities for the rapid handling of the largest liners in the world at the mouth of the Thames. This development is part of the very ambitious improvement scheme in the port, costing altogether £15,000,000, in- stituted by the Port of London Authority.

Modelled on Liverpool Mr. Frederick Palmer, consulting en- gineer to the Authority, told "The Journal of Commerce" to-day that the Tilbury landing-stage was modelled on the Liverpool stage, but was not as long. In appearance it is very much the same, with the same type of hing- ed bridges. Sir Edwin Cooper has de signed the lofty baggage halls and Customs offices in the rear. It is only

of an enlarged entrance to the West India Dock and the cutting of passages between its various branches in order to convert it into a system which will render it one of the most popular and serviceable docks in the port,

While we have been carrying out our programme of extensions and im- brovements in the port we have not neglected our own comfort, and that of the staff generally. Thanks to the genius of Sir Edwin Cooper we are housed in a suite of offices which are as fine as can be found anywhere in the world, and are a credit to the port: We have supplied premises and equipment for a head office stuff luncheon club in the proximity of the head office, and have established a pen- sion fund more generous to the staff. probably than in the case

any other similar organisation.

At Tilbury we have extended the main dock and provided now sheds and also a berth for the accommodation of the Tilbury-Dunkirk passenger service. Mr. C. G. Ammon, M P. (Parliamen The new works at Tiibary, which aretary and Financial Secretary to the now approaching completion, comprise Admiralty), in his reply on behalf of an entrance dock 1,090ft in length, the guests, indicated how thrilled he and a dry dock 750ft. in length, but had been by the sight of London River susceptible of being extended to 1,000ft. of London knew nothing about. The Duchess of York, 20,000-ten Canadian Pacific trans-Atlantic steamer, is not going to crash the new bridge which; a few days after this pictire was taken, was completed across the St. Lawrence in the harbor of Montreal, although the odd result of the photographer's work makes a smash-up seem almost inevitable. As a matter of fact the bridge is actually 26 feet above the tip of the Iner's fore- mast which itself is 30. feet higher than the funnel. The midget figures of the steel workers on the bridge give another Indication of the great height of the structure,

the delay in the railway side of the programme that prevents the stage be ing used immediately in the bid to make London the first passenger traffic pert of the world. The depth of water at the landing-stage i do feet. The length of the stage is 1,150 feet, which will acommodate two ordinary linets or one large ocean greyhound. If neces sary another 500 feet can be added to the landing-stage, and then two or the largest ships in the world can lay alongside at Tilbury. This is a dream dear to the heart of Lord Ritchie and the P.L.A.-A dream never likely to crystalise.

At the Survey docks we have con- structed a new dock and new sheds for

the timber trade, and we are now gaged in providing a pumping icatal lation and further quay and shed ac

commodation for that trade,
