COOLIE KILLED

ALLEGED ASSAILANT TRIES SUICIDE

AN OLD GRUDGE REVIVED

At about 3.80 yesterday after- noon, the Police were called out to investigate a mysterious and tragic affair which occurred at the Yuen Mei boarding house, No. 68, Connaught-road West.

On arrival they found that a coclie employed in the place had. been murdered. and the alleged assailant, a Chinese lodger, was lying unconscious with a razor cut in his throat, believed to have been self-inflicted in an attempt

to commit suicide.

The dead coolie is Wu Chui-mei

(47) who had worked at

the

boarding house for over ten years.

The lodger is a man named Hung Ah-mei, 忽 returned immigrant, I. from Singapore who arrived in Hong Kong by the s.8. "Anhul” on August 21.

The cause of the affair is be- lieved to be an old grudge be tween the men over a woman. At 3 o'clock yesterday, the two men had a meal together with six i other lodgers and then the coolie was ordered by the lodger Wu to clean his cubicle. Wu followed the coolie in. He is presumed to have then attacked the coolie, who soon after rushed out with a deep gash in his throat.

He collapsed in the dining room and expired almost immediately afterward. The boarding house master went to the verandah and blew a Police whistle. Then the lodger Wu walked out of his cubicle with a razor in his hand, and after, it is alleged, admitting that he had killed the coolle, re turned to his cubicle and there ent his own throat and
