THE PLAYERS. THE CROWD AND RESULTS IN THE AMERICAN

THE DIAMOND

FIRST GAMES REVIEWED

By "Bingle"]

Pour teanis have been in action since the League opened, and enough has been secn of the players to form a opinion. It now remains for the Kioras to make their debut. I also appears that the inevitable army of rope liners-except there isn't a rope-will do much to' sway the fat at some of the teams one way or the her, as they did in

former gears,

Now for the players. A locul seribe whose idea of baseball, and parti- cularly of the art of pitching, is like a blind man's idea of water-colnir, bas been blowing the trumpet loud and clear for Koga, the pitching ace of the Japanose pack. Well, all I can say is that Koga did not show up to the large headlines which the same scribe ha lavished upon him.

In my opinion I think Tsukagachi,: the southpaw, car twirl a better game, It is a problem, though, whether he can last the seven inning. I doubt it, from the exhibition he gave on Satur- day last. But he certainly has a better aped and is able to put nerosa some good curves and drops. He also sells

some smoke ones, too.

Two more League games played yesterday evening at the V.R.C. and resulted in a win for the King's Own Scottish Borderers and for Kowloon "A".

The first game was between Kow- loon "A" and the Royal Navy, both teams lining up as follows:

Kowloon "A" Headley. Pranks, Rodgers, Logan, Kerr, Simpson, and Railton.

Royal Navy: Hampton, Bashford, Betr. Newbury. Sullivag, Smith, and Parker,

There is certainly not much flaw to pick with the Chinese team, and 1 think—if other teams do not pull up their sox and settle down to busi- ness-they will wrest the shield back from the Filipinos. MAYER'S FINE BOWLING.

London. Yesterday. In, the county cricket championship Gloucestershire defcated Warwick- shire by 106 runs.

Gloucester batted first and scored 173 (Mayer taking five wickets for 66 runs) and 200 runs in their second innings.

Warwickshire scored 102 in their first and 165 runs in their second innings. Reuter.

It's hard to say just what Light Heavyweight Champion Tommy Loughran is thinking as he scrutinizes the boxing glove that landed hard and often on Private James J. Braddock during their fifteen- Of round bout at the Yankee Stadium, New York, recently. course Tommy won the decision and retained his title, but Tommy wasn't the only one who did the punching, for Mr. Braddock managed to squeeze in a few nice socks, as Tommy's honest face shows.

In the second badf, Simpson was not to be denied. He opened the score from a corner pass and he- ̈ fore the final whistle was blown, he ATHLETIC MEETING added another poiut. The Kowloon team won by two goals to nil.

Faulkner,

This gang have so far showed the best fielding side, and even at bat they aren't so far behind. Ed. Chang is all right as a pitcher and I think he will improve with more practice. The great thing is that he and Matty Finlayson and Ferguson. Chang understand each other, and The Borderers predominated the what they do not know about teleplay from the start and the Chinese graphy is not worth mentioning. Shim territory was invaded on several is not yet ton vid to continue the good occasions; Faulkner eventually net- old game, and the fact that a man is a ted for the soldiers. The Chin- "papa" euls no fee where a ball game is enncerned.

The Filipino crew have certainly made a good start, but it is problematic whether the good work can be kept up. Alvares, as a pitcher, is good for the

rst four cantos, and I doubt if he can! keep on any longer. Zafra as a sub is also unreliable, and all the other side have got to do is to hand out a little

razzberry, and he will be more rattled than a rattle-snake.

#

+

In Selding, this crew can rely only on about four men. The others are not per manently safe, although they show a flash of brilliance at times. They car also boast of a coupla of batters, and they are Zafra and Terry Leonard. Even they, wherr confronted with a pitcher of Ruffin calibre, will not shine in the way they did when eating out of Russakoff on Sunday. I do not think they can keep the shield.

'COUP SUCCESSFUL

Yesterday afternoon armed rob- bers raided the premises of the Shan Shing Transportation. Co., No. 18, Eastern-street.

Three men were concerned in the coup, and according to the victims, they all spoke the Punti dialect. They visited the place on the pretext of discussing business. Then two other rob-: bers entered and fastened the door behind them.
