It is learned that beginning On September 1, official hours at ali Government Departments in Car ton will be from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.. giving a three hours' recess at mid-day. This arrangement gives a nine hour working day compared with the eight hour. day that now ob- tains. Present, working hours are from 8 am to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The new schedule has been de- cided upon after careful delibera- tion. In the early morning hoars itality forces are at their fresh- est and the worker will therefore work best and at highest efficiency Early rising during these hours. is called for, and this will auto- mattenlly discourage late nights. The three hours mid-day recess is calculated to have a wholesome effect on the worker as it enables him to rest during the hottest period of the day; incidentally it affords time for study or recrea- tion. A book of autograph letters made £870 after bidding had opened at £100, at the auction of the remain- ing contents of Rutland Lodge, Rutland-gardens. Knightsbridge. conducted by Messrs. George Trollepe and Sons (Knights- bridge). In this book are a two- line quotation in the handwriting of Dr. Johraun; a 2 page quarto letter by Robert Burns (signed in. full) to David Blair, dated Ellis- land, Aug. 27, 1789; and auto- Walter from Sir graph letters Scott, dated Abbotsford, April 2, 1828; William Wordsworth, Tenny- You, Thomas Carlyle, W. M. Thackeray, Robert Stephenson, William Pitt, the Duke of Welling- ton. George III, George IV., and many other notabilities.
