WHIPPET ROADSTER

The ever increasing number of the new Superior Whippet Four Collegiate Roadster models that are now seen on the streets, the rural highways and at the country lubs throughout the nation is al indication of the popularity this smart model.

MORRIS MINOR

SMALL, BUT EFFICIENT CAR

Sydney, July 18... The small car, during the past four or five years, has forced itself into a much more prominent place than it formerly occupied, and it has become almost a common-place now for the owner of one to set out on a country or even interstate tour, some hundreds of miles in length. The exploits of Messrs. P. W. Armstrong and G. Mariley in their little Triumph, in which they established a miniature-car record from Fremantle to Sydney, of Messrs. Antill and McGee, in their Riley Nine, in which Mr. Arm- strong's time was broken by a sub topsstantial margin of Mr. N. Green- wood, who made a complete circuit of Australia in a small Citroen, and of Messrs. Hector MacQuarrie and R. Matthews, who penetrated farthest north to Cape York Penin- sula, in an Austin Seven, not to mention numbers of other fine per- formances in cars of under 1100; and even under 750 cc, have brought the tiny vehicle into public notice, and helped considerably to extend its popularity.

The water-proof collapsible which attaches firmly to the windshield may easily be lowered for raised while the detachable side curtains provide utmost protection when driving in inclement weather. Metal steps on the rear bumperette and on the right rear fonder provides easy entrance and exit at the rumble seat.

This roadster model also is proving ideal for summer touring purposes for

two with the roomy rear section for use in carrying luggage. Tertion is provid ed with lock which insure safety at all times for the con- tents.

The long, sweeping lines of the Whippet Collegiate Roadster are admirably set off by the attractive colour combinations and the wire wheels all around. The spare wheels and tyre are carried snugly in a fender wheel mounted in the right forward fender and held firmly in place by means of *1 sturdy metal arm which is attached to the body.

Recently opportunity was taken to test out one of the latest.pf this type of car, a Morris Minor, a make) which was introduced into Austra- lia only a few months ago, but in the intervening period has made a good name for itself in competition as well as in the hands of private. owners. The car used for the test was demonstrator fitted with a tour body, havay two bucket seats for the driver and one pas senger, while there was also room at the back for two more--as a matter of fact, the car was set the task of conveying three men of Because of its vary design it has average size for about four miles in this seat. The car has a wheel- gained the reputation of being

base of 6ft. Gin., and 3ft. 6in. track, one of the fastest Whippet Four models ever built by the Willys-tremendious scope for the installa which naturally does not offer Overland Company while its power development carries it over the steepest slopes and grades with- out any strain on the engine.

Like all other Willys-Overland products the roadster model is equipped with

the "Finger Tip Control" which has proved a sensa- tion since its introduction this year by the Toledo manufacturer. This system enables the driver to

control all the functions of start-

tion of a four-seater body, and the

back seats are more suitable for two children than for adults, but) more room is secured by the pro vision of wells for the feet of the rear seat passengers beside the pro- peller shaft, over which a metal shield is placed. The body had two wide doors, access being gained to the back seat by folding one of those in front.

their higher power. At the top of Little Razorback a halt for lunch was made, and afterwards the Journey continued with a much cooler engine to tackle the hairpin bends and steepest sections of the mountain. Nevertheless, the little car rarely needed full throttle in second gear and for most of the climb had power in hand, topping the hill at about 18 miles an hour. From then on to Bargo the car made a run practically devoid of incident, descending the southern *side of Razorback comfortably without recourse to the brakes, until right at the edge of the creek, and a fun was made out along the road at the Bargo River bridge towards Picton Lakes. There is a very bad bump on this section of the road about halfway between the Southern-road and the Picton Lakes settlement, which cannot be seen from such a small car until too late to avoid it; the whole four wheels seemed to crash into this simultaneously. This was about the most unpleasant feature of the whole drive.

The little car was taken over! after dark on Friday night al; Castlereagh-street, and driven out through the traffic of Park and William streets. The first impres- sion gained of it was the surpris- ing cagerness of the tiny engine for its work. There was no suspi- sion of sluggishness, although, of course, it was found necessary to keep revs. well up to a high point, otherwise frequent gear-changing was involved. The car, however, was not at all unpleasant to drive n dense traffic, its responsiveness the accelerator, especially when proper use was made of second and op gears, and tractability, thanks the good four-wheel brakes, to- relber with its small size and good
