PLAGUE CASE

Not The First In Five Years

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

"Plagueis a very dramatic disinfected rat e doubtful although A person may be walking it may have bolted off a ship and about apparently in good health found its way into 38, Des Voeux- and then fall dead in the street," roads said Dr. H. A. Fawcett, Medical Officer of Health, at the fortnight- ly meeting of the Sanitary Board. Mr. N. L. Smith (President of the Board) presided.

After the usual routine business had been transacted. the prosi dent said that he was sorry to Inform members that a case of plague had ocenrred in the Colony, Ile, however, did not think it was the first case report ed for five years. He understood that there had been isolated cases while he was on leave.

The case reported fow days zago had been confirmed by the M.O.H., who would make a state- ment to the Board. There was. however, no cause for bringing in the stringent preventive mes sures under which infected areas could be pulled to pieces.

: Dr. Fawcett's Statement

In his statement, Dr. Fawcett said that the case was reported from No. 33 Des Voeux-road West, the sufferer being a Chinese woman of 62 years of age. Jeu Hawk was in charge of the rase and he had vished the place with Dr. Hawk.

Dr.

The first report he had had were particulars of an enlarged gland, and it was of a rather doubtful nature. Further specimens were then taken for examination.

I wish to emphasise that I do not think there is any cause at all for generat alarm. This CRSC did not come from a poor or over- crowded district and cne has to remember that it is rather late in the year for plague. I don't think we shall bear of another

case,"

In reply to questions put by u member of the board, Dr. Fawrett said there was no possibility of the infection lying dormant in a person for

any length of time. When the infection obtained a hold, the cases either recovered or died within a few days.

A Dramatic Disease "Plagne is a very dramatic dis- ease," he continued. "A persoa may be walking about apparently in quite good health and then fall dead in the street.
