REVERENCE
The Twelfth Law of the Scout
AN IMPORTANT ONE
I have no doubt that you ali know your Scout Laws by heart, and it will be jolly interesting if you were to write a short essay on each one of the twelve laws. promise you that I will publish them for you.
1
Reverence, as you all know, is the twelfth and last law of the Scout, and I think it is the most important of any of the twelve.
Reverence our dictionary tells us-means veneration, honour, respect and an act of obeisance. It is therefore clear that without re- verence, no law, no rule or regula- tion, can be of any worth. To lack reverenec is to lack respect. With- out respect there is no obedience.
Therefore, be you a Scout or not, I strongly urge all boys to cultivate the spirit of reverence. It is the hallmark of the strong man. The noblest and most sacred of our institutiona-the Church, the Courts, the flag-have the ré- verence and respect of every true citizen.
We must also revere and
respect our parents, our superiors "and our elders.
No boy should get the wrong idea that reverence is a sign of weak- ness. It is, in fact, strong evidence of strength, of manly courtesy, of esteem and veneration.
When you see a boy taking off his hat on entering a church, or when in the presence of ladies, you dare not call him weak. That boy has the underlying nobility just as there is a mark of patriotism in the act of uncovering when the flag goes by.

The Austrian Scouts are ardent campers, and make good use of their glorious country. Like their Czech brother Scouts, they use wooden walls on their tents.

The badge of the B.-P. Belgian Scouts is an arrowhead and scroll. The Boy Scouts de Belgique have a distinctive metal badge which consists of the arrowhead super- imposed with the Belgian lion in black. Underneath is a soroll with the words "Toujours Pret.”
