Commander Ramon Franco. Spanish flier, is caught in the act
1 of writing notes on his first epochal fight from Spain to South America. He and three companions made a forced landing on the ocean and were adrift for more than a week when they were rescued by HM S. Engle and taken aboard along with their plane, it an attempted flight to the United States.

Mitchell, whose husbands piloted the endurance flight of the "City of Cleveland," spent most of their time at the flying field as the battle against time and weather goes on. The inset shows a contact between the nurse plane and the endurance flyers. The record which they sought to better was 172 hours, made at Fort Worth, Texas and since eclipsed.

Rumours around Washington are saying that there is a widen-. ing rift between President Hoover, left, and the Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon. Among the reasons cited as confirming the rumour are disagreement on tax reduction, ideas on the "eponenty programme," prohibition development of the last few months and the French war debt. President Hoover has been having his way in most cases and Mellon is said to feel his loss of power keenly.
