morning, before Mr. T. S. Whyte Smith, a Chinese was charged with the unlawful possession of 1.35 taels of raw pium, discovered in bis belt by the Police when he was on a bus, at the junction of Shanghai Street and Waterloo Road, Yaumati.

Accused said that a friend of his had given him the parcel.

His Worship: Do, you always put parcels that friends give you to carry, under your belt? Therefore, you are guilty of possession. Fired $135 or, in default, one month's hard labour, the opium to be confiscated.

The first accused, Tang Yee- hing, made an appeal to the Magistrate saying that he had a mother in the country who was over 70 years of age who might die if she heard that he was in Tail. In view of that he begged his Worship to release him!--

Magistrate: I am afraid that I can't release you because of your aged mother. You will have to stand your trial.
