WATER SCHEMES

(Continued from page 1.)

Collection of Rain-Water Collecting the rain that we can reasonably expect to fall betweon now and the end of September is the only true method of saving the situation, unless an outside supply is tapped and the water piped to Hong Kong.

Water from any outside source must be piped which is the only practicable method of transporting water. (By piping I mean pipes, water races, conduits, etc.).

IN CASE OF FIRE"

THEATRE

FINE OF $50 IMPOSED

As regards the erection of a large distillation plant for augmenting | OBSTRUCTING GANGWAYS AT the present supply, the scheme is possible but impracticable and too costly. Small stills for vaporising sea-water are possible and practic- able, but the resulting drinking. water will cost from 6 cents to 9 cents per gallon.

Estimates

(a) Small Catchment Drains.

I inch of rainfall 14,520,000 gallons per square mile.

We are catering for light rains, say I inch in 24 hours.

The run off would not be more than 7,200,000 gallons In the 24 hours. This would fun off: at the rate of 300,000 gallons per hour, and a drain 1'6" wide and 12 inches deep will be able to carry the water. One coolie can cut 6 feet per day allowing time for him to get to and from his work.

The cost will be 10 cents per foot run or $528 per mile.

Allow for wooden flaming to carry water across rocky hilsides and pther expenses say $500, the cost per mile will equal $1,128.

By working a large number of small gangs the drains can be cut at the rate of a mile per day. 10 to 15 miles will probably be the limit

on the island.

(b) Tanks for Dwellings. One 300-gallon tank can be filled by a fall of 1 inch of rain falling on a roof area of 500 square feet un a roof 30' x 20'.
