BARONETS' BADGE
THE KING AUTHORISES SPECIAL DESIGN.
in
It was officially announced
a warrant authorising all baronets mail week that the King has issued
except those of Scotland to wear on
Л occasions
special appropriate
a ribaud badge suspended from round their necks.
The badge will consist of a shield of the Arms of Ulster (on a silver field a left hand gules) surmounted by an Imperial Crown enamelled in its proper colours, the whole enclos- ed by an oval border embossed with gilt scroll work.
The border for haronets of Eng- land will be a design, of roses; for a design of baronets of Ireland shamrocks; for haranets of Great Britain a design of roses and thistles; and for baronets of the United Kingdom a design of roses, thistles and shamrocks. The riband will be orange with a narrow dark blue edge on both sides.
Baronets of Scotland
Baronets of Scotland are already
& warrant entitled, under
of a badge of the Charles I., to wear Royal Arms of Scotland superimpos- ed on the Arms of Nova Scotia.
The wearing of the new badge will be optional, and baronets desiring to wear it must supply themselves with it at their own expense. The badges will be made by the Royal Mint.
au-
This royal warrant follows the one issued three years ago thorising the wearing by knights bachelors of a badge on the left side of the coat.
The inclusion in the new badge of the Arms of Ulster recalls the origin of baronets, a rank instituted by James I. in 1611, ostensibly for the defence of the new "plantation”
of Ulster. The arms contain the famous Bed Hand of Ulster.
Charles I, established the degree of baronet in Scotland, the avowed object being to aid a scheme for the colonisation of Nova Scotia.
