The hen and the egg problem arises here in rather an acute form. Cleaning in England is expensive, and it takes a long Time. Where a winter garment

cannot be parted from for a week it has to go dirty, and this also applies to other clothese. On the other hand, with a greater demand for cleaning probably the process would be speeded up and would be come cheaper:

In France and Germany cleaning. is part of the routine. No-dresses or coats are put away dirty for any lengthy period, and one of the futures of Paris is the number of little cleaners who are detled about the city, to whom Rarisians resort with the utmost regularity.

And

if the process is necessary in Eng- land, where coal smoke is allowed pretty well to have its own way, and where colours become dulled in the shortest possible time under their cloak of dirt. In Paris dresses, and coats can be received back after about three days, and sometimes earlier.. In Germany they can be had the next day. In neither is the expense considerable, as it the case here; for one reason, because the pressing is beautifully done even in the case of pleading by the owner of the little shop. Clothes that are thus cleaned and pressed last a good deal longer,
