OPIUM CONCEALED IN A BASKET

FINE OF $3,000

That the Revenue Department was puzzled, was admited by Re- venue Officer A. W. Grimmitt at the Central Court this morning.. when he prosecuted a Chinese for possession of five taels of prepar- ed non-Government oplum..

Mr. Grimmitt said that he could not understand how the accused had managed to place the opium in the side of the basket without damaging it--unless the opium had been placed there when the baskel was made many years ago.

The opium had been discovered by a Chinese searcher who had pierced the side of the basket with strew-driver.. As a result opium bad oozed out. On looking inside the basket, it was found to contain tea.

#

The accused was said to be a passenger on a vessel bound for Singapore.

A fine of $3,000, with the al- ternative of a year's imprisonment was imposed.
