GRAMOPHONE NOTES
"BURMESE COLOUR NEEDLES
A correspondent writes in the "New Statesman":
Before discussing the month's records I want to speak of the new "Burmese Colour Needles" which have recently been put on the mar ket. These needles are made by a patent process from chemically purified keratin; they do not wear out the records as steel needles do, since they are slightly softer than the substance of the records; they tone, free from give a far better any tinriness and scratch, and the tone is free from the muffled quality which one gets from bra needles. It is claimed for them that each needle will play fifty records, and they cost two shillings per packet of six They are most satisfactory with the voice, solo instruments and slight orchestral and chamber music, and the tone is pretty well perfect, each instrument having its natural colour. There is only one defect that I cau find and that is they do not last. I have not been able to get anything like fifty re- cords' wear per needle; in fact, the figure is nearer ten. This makes them very expensive compared with steel needles. But nobody who has a "Burmese Colour" needle used will ever use a steel needle again. If the price can be reduced they ought to siveep needles off the market--which would be a blessing to everyone with sensitive ears.
New Records
First in importance among the new records are the new recordinga, by the Capet Quartet of Paris of Beethoven's Quartet In minor, Op. 121 blue label, five in case) and Quartet in A
are
C sharp (Columbia, 12-in. disca of Beethoven's minor, Op. 132 (Columbia, blue label, five 12-in. discs).
Both these records admirable and the best we have to date of these Beethoven quartets. Another Beethoven record which will please all music-lovers is the Trio No. 7 in B flat major, played by Cortot, Thibaud and Casals (H.M.V., red label, five 12-in discs). This is fine recording, but there is a harsh, gritty tone from the strings occasionally.

FOLK DANCES
LADY BADEN-POWELL'S HOPE
Lady Baden-Powell recently ex- pressed the hope that young men and maidens of the future will be dancing the graceful dances of their ancestora on the village greens instead of "the imported stuff from abroad which we pretend to call dancing." Lady Baden-Powell, with Sir Robert and their two daughters, has just returned to her Hampshire home after a six weeks' cruise to West Africa and ele- where.
"On the boat we started a little class in folk dancing just for fun," "Pas said Lady Baden-Powell. sengers were enormously thrilled by the dancing-the old measures of Elizabeth's time which have been handed down from generation to generation. Soon almost everyone on the boat was dancing-young and old. I-was the only person on board who could teach it, and luckily I had the music and gramophone records with me, and the ship's pianist helped. My niece acted as assistant instructress. *
"The English Folk Dancing So- ciety, of which I am a member, is great strides. We hope making that by degrees there will be more and more of this dancing on the village greens and in the halls of Britain. Massed dancing is to be done by Scouts at the Jamboree in August, at which 30,000 Scouts will take part."
