Junior Physiology Senior Physiology Pharmacology

It can hardly be said that the equipment of the laboratorics is up to the standard considered as necessary in a modern medical school. Many of the mammalian experiments actually performed by students themselves in other universities cannot even be per formed here as class demonstra- tions, and thus the acquisition of Physiological knowledge becomes largely a matter of lectures and book work instead of actual ex- very experience g perimental poor foundation on which to build a sound knowledge of such practical subject as Medicine.

This lack of equipment effects not only the Senior Physiology students, but also those attending the Pharmacology classes where the actual witnessing of the ac- tion of drugs is of paramount im- portance.

The equipment of the Depart ment is purchase 1 by money from the Ho Fonk Fund, but unfortun ataly the custom has been to use the principal for this purpose, so that the Fund has now dwindled to nearly $1,000. At the present there is no Fund at all, for re- search purposes.

Department of Anatomy

Staff:--

Joseph L. Shellshear; D.S.O. M.B., CH.M., (Professor of Ana- tomy)

R. J. Wong, M.B., Ch.M., (Tutor in Anatomy).

E. W. Kirk, M.B., Ch.B., F.R.C.S.E., (Demonstrator in Ana tomy).

The work of this Department comprises the teaching of medical students in the Second and Third Years of the. medical curriculam.

The classes are divided into junior and senior groups and in- clude courses in Enbryology, His- tology, Neurology, and General Anatomy.

Department of Biology. The reader in Biology arrived in the Colony in November, 1928 and took over the Department from Major Beamish, R.A.M.C., who had been temporarily in charge. He found the Depart ment very hadly equipped in every respect. There were no stores of Chemicals, preserved specimens, or apparatus, and very little glass,

and no evidence existed to show that Botany had ever been taught in the University.

A grant of $2,000 was. recom- mended by the finance committee and the majority of this has been spent on equipment a large por- tion of which has not yet arriv ed in the Colony.

The Department is temporarily. housed in a dingle laboratory (and an office) in the School of Tropical Medicine but the Senate has decided that suitable accom- modation should be provided as soon as possible. Plans are being prepared of the conversion of the two storeyed: building at present occupied by the University coolies, into a Biology building and it is hoped that this building will be ready, before next session,
