HONG KONG,

KWANGSI CLIQUE

ARREST OF SOME PROMINENT. OFFICIALS

OTHERS ON BLACK LIST

Canton, Yesterday. Canton Kuomintang Headquarters and the Canton Government, realis- ing the inability of the Kwangsi clique, which have ruled Canton for same time, to effect a "come back" for a time, have, since the fall of Wuchow, arrested quite a number of party Committee men and offi- cials originally recommended or ap- pointed by the Kwangs! clique.

Up to date, at least 27 have been imprisoned or put on the black-list. Among those to be arrested will be Mr. Feng Choak-wan, former Con- missioner of Finance.

-University Ex-President

Mr. Koo Man-yu, formerly Presi- dent of Sun Yat Sen University in Canton, a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Kuo- mintang recently dismissed from office by the Chiang Kai-shek sec- tion, is to visit Sorth China from the North, according information received by Canton Kuomintang.

Mr. Koo is a close friend and associate of Mr. Wang Ching-wei and his presence in the South may lead to the conclusion that the "left" faction of the Kuomintang is being reorganised to oppose Nan- king.-Nan Chung Kuo New Ser- vice.

We have quite enough excellent 'British, French, German, and other European films to satisfy cur pab- lic, and the idea that the world can- not do without American films is

erroneous.

On the other hand, Mr. J. C, Bavetta, managing director of the Fox Films organisation in France, said:-

We cannot make a loss in doing business. Let the French film firms produce as many pictures as they But like. We ask nothing better. what we want is an open market in the film industry and that quality shall decide the question of success.

Effect of British Quota Sir Philip Cunliffe-Liste", President of the Board of Trade, stated in the House of Commons last December, that the Cinematograph Films Act, 1927. which obliges renters to purchase and Pdistribute 7% per cent of British films, and exhibitors to purchase and exhibit per cent. of British films (both quotas rising eventualy to 20 per cent.), had proved "a tremendous success" and had given great impotue to production:

The official organ of the United States Department of Trade last Nov ember gave figures showing that in the first nine months of last year Bri- tain imported 2,000,000 feet less of American films than in the correspond- ing period of the previous year owing to the quota Act,
